Steve Poizner for Insurance Commissioner
A civic-minded inventor and entrepreneur, Steve Poizner is the founder of SnapTrack, a highly successful Silicon Valley company. SnapTrack developed breakthrough technology that allows emergency services to pinpoint cell phone calls and, thereby, to save lives. Steve's professional achievements followed naturally from a brilliant academic career-he graduated from the University of Texas as the top male student in 1978 and went on to earn his MBA with honors at Stanford University. In 2001, Steve was tapped to serve as a White House Fellow in Washington, DC, arriving only days before the 9/11 terrorist attacks. In a time of national crisis, Steve's standout leadership and caring pragmatism enabled him to serve his country as Director of Critical Infrastructure Protection in the National Security Council. Six months later, Steve began his second White House assignment in a field close to his heart-improving services to disadvantaged young people. Steve proposed a new White House Task Force for Disadvantaged Youth, which was implemented by presidential executive order. President Bush adopted Steve's proposal for a $300 million mentoring program for adolescents in low-income areas and incorporated it in the 2003 State of the Union Address. When Steve returned to California, he sought out new ways to give back to his community. As co-founder of both EdVoice, a key lobbying organization for K-12 children in California, and the California Charter Schools Association, Steve had long been passionate about improving the quality of the state's public schools and restoring the values of educational excellence, competition and choice. With these goals in mind, Steve turned his passion into action: he volunteered to teach 12th grade American Government at Mount Pleasant High School in east San Jose and was selected "Rookie Teacher of the Year." As an experienced businessperson, Steve had grown disenchanted with California's increasingly anti-business climate. But instead of moving his business out of state, as others were doing, he chose to act, taking on the Democratic establishment and running for State Assembly. Steve narrowly lost by 3 percentage points in a district that John Kerry carried by 34 percentage points. Steve's campaign registered over 10,000 new Republican voters. Steve Poizner is not a career politician. He does not seek public office to build his resume; he has embraced the privilege of public service throughout his life, both professionally and personally. His commitment to the people of his district led him to run for State Assembly; that same commitment now spurs him to serve the people of California as Insurance Commissioner. In this often overlooked but crucially important position, Steve will employ tough business skills and strong beliefs-in the competitive free market system and increased consumer choice and protection-to stamp out fraud, reduce insurance rates, and benefit Californians across the state.
